Picking out new countertops is exciting, but it can also be a little overwhelming. New countertops will transform your entire kitchen, but the style you pick has to stand up to years of wear -- while looking great.

Luckily, you have plenty of options. Here are some of your best bets when it comes to countertops:

Granite

Popular in new home builds, granite is heat- and scratch-resistant. It comes in unique colors and natural patterns and finishes, making it a little easier to find just what you’re looking for. The downside: It’s on the pricier side.

Quartz

Quartz is extremely durable and can stand up to kitchen punishment. Unlike granite, quartz doesn’t need sealing. It’s also cheaper than granite, but repairs can be expensive.

Stainless Steel

If you’re going for an industrial look, stainless steel is a great choice. It’s heat-resistant and durable, but depending on the gauge of the material, it can be costly. A huge bonus: Stainless steel is recyclable.

Laminate

Laminate comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. It’s cheap to install but can be permanently scarred by kitchen knives or nicks.

Wood

Wood countertops like butcher block or bamboo can add a warm, natural feeling to your kitchen. They do need maintenance and should not be used near sinks or other wet areas.

Soapstone

Soapstone has been used for generations. It typically comes in darker shades and doesn’t need to be sealed. However, since it’s soft, it shows cuts and scratches and should be maintained with mineral oil.

Marble

The beauty of marble comes with a maintenance price tag. It stains easily and needs regular resealing.

Don’t hesitate to mix and match countertops -- your island doesn’t have to have the same top as your cabinets.
