Buyer’s Guide to Home Flooring Options

4 TOP OPTIONS FOR FLOORING
A large part of your home’s appeal is what lies beneath your feet, and deciding on new flooring can be a daunting task. Here’s a breakdown of four common flooring materials in homes across America.

Hardwood
Whether you choose a classic oak or a more daring white pine, hardwood floors are durable and can last for decades with the right care. But there is a downfall; if your home encounters a water leak, you may need to replace a lot of wood. Cost for installation generally ranges from $8 to $12 a square foot.

Carpet
Carpet — the builder’s standby for generations — comes in a variety of colors, and many are stain resistant. Most carpet types can last about 10 years with proper care, but they can be harder to save after water damage. If moisture gets under the pile, mold and mildew can grow unchecked and become a health hazard. Carpet costs can vary widely depending on the material, but expect it to fall in the range of $2 to $10 a square foot.

Tile
Tile floors have the advantage of durability, easy maintenance and timeless appeal. Unlike carpet or wood, however, tile has no insulation value, so expect these floors to be cold in the winter and slippery when wet. The average cost of an installed tile floor is about $5 to $15 a square foot.

Concrete
A properly sealed concrete floor is the easiest floor to keep clean, making this a convenient option for pet owners. Concrete, which can be finished and stained in a variety of ways, resists bacteria, odors and stains. But cracks can develop, and you’ll need to reseal the floor every few years. The average cost of a concrete floor can range from $2 to $20 a square foot.
