Fire Prevention Week Facts and Tips

Preventing Fire Emergencies at Home

Fires cause billions in property damage each year. Approximately half of the fires reported each year, are structure fires, which include personal residences. Fire Prevention Week was last week (October 7-13) but its always a perfect time to take a look around your home to assess its fire risk and talk with your family about how to stay safe.

Common Causes of Household Fires
Cooking equipment ranked as the No. 1 cause of house fires according to a Home Structure Fires report issued by the National Fire Protection Association. Never leave the stove unattended, as cooking grease is highly flammable and flames can spread quickly.

Household space heaters also pose a hazard and should be kept clear of flammable materials, such as furniture or drapery. Be careful with flammable fuels such as kerosene, and always turn off heaters before leaving the home, even if they run on electricity. Electrical fires are less common, but still pose a threat in homes with faulty wiring or overloaded circuits.

Candle burning and smoking are also common causes of structure fires. Never smoke in bed or leave a cigarette burning in a full ashtray and always monitor burning candles.

Protecting Your Family
Even with the best prevention practices in place, some fires are unavoidable. Be prepared for anything by talking to your family about what to do if the smoke detectors ever go off. For smaller fires, keep a properly rated fire extinguisher on hand, and make sure everyone knows how to use it.

A fire escape plan is a great way to avoid panic if you see flames. Create two escape routes just in case one gets blocked, and make sure everyone agrees on a safe space to meet once they are out of danger.
